Although Mac Miller's 'Blue Slide Park' album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, criticism of the debut album made the rapper turn to drugs. During an interview with, Mac Miller said that despite the success of 'Blue Slide Park,' the first independently distributed hip-hop album to debut atop the chart since 1995, the criticism ultimately made him addicted to promethazine, known as lean. 'A lot of the reviews were more on me as a person,' he said. 'To be honest, that was even worse.
You’re 19, you’re so excited to put out your first album, you put it out - and no one has any respect for you or for what you did.' During his Macadelic tour in Spring 2012, which stopped at many colleges across the country, Miller began using promethazine. As time went on, he was branded as a “frat rapper.' The criticism and stress turned his recreational use into an addiction. 'I love lean; it’s great.
I was not happy and I was on lean very heavy,” Miller says. “I was so fucked up all the time it was bad. My friends couldn’t even look at me the same.
On July 2012, he was involved in a lawsuit over copyright infringement with one of his favorite artists, Lord Finesse. He had used the beat of Finesse’s song, “Hip 2 Da Game” for his track, “Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza.” The lawsuit has since been settled for an undisclosed sum. He tried quitting lean multiple times but wasn't successful until November 2012, before he began to film his MTV2 reality series, 'Mac Miller and The Most Dope Family.' Since quitting, Miller seems be on an upwards spiral to the top.
“Mac Miller and The Most Dope Family” premieres on MTV2 on February 26 while his sophomore album, 'Watching Movies with the Lights Off,' is expected to debut in early 2013.
